Alpha E-Tec Plus NX Combi Boiler Review: Specs & Cost

If you’ve been quoted an Alpha and you’re not sure whether that’s your installer doing you a favour or cutting a corner, this should settle it. Alpha isn’t a household name in the way Worcester Bosch is, but the E-Tec range has quietly become one of the better-value combis fitted in UK homes, and the current Plus NX model carries a longer standard warranty than most boilers costing considerably more.

Here’s what you’re actually getting, what it costs to have fitted this winter, and the bits of the installation that decide whether it lasts ten years or gives you grief in year three.

Alpha E-Tec NX vs E-Tec Plus NX: what’s the difference?

Alpha’s naming causes more confusion than it should. There is no “standard E-Tec” versus “E-Tec Plus versus NX” three-tier ladder. NX simply denotes the current generation, and there are two E-Tec combis on sale:

If your quote just says “Alpha E-Tec 28”, ask which one it is. The gap between a 7-year E-Tec NX and a 10-year E-Tec Plus NX is real money over the life of the boiler, and the units don’t cost dramatically different amounts at trade.

Two things worth understanding before you use that table.

The number in the name is the hot water output, not the heating output. A “38” is a 34.8 kW central heating boiler. This trips people up when they’re matching a boiler to a radiator count, and it’s why an installer sizing purely off the badge number can end up oversizing your heating side.

Flow rates are quoted at a 35°C temperature rise. That’s the industry convention, and it’s optimistic in January. Your incoming mains water in a UK winter sits around 5 to 8°C, so getting to a comfortable 40°C shower means a bigger rise than 35°C, and the real flow drops accordingly. A 12.1 l/min boiler behaves more like 10 l/min on a cold February morning. If you have a big rain-head shower or two people who shower at the same time, size up rather than down.

Alpha E-Tec Plus NX pros: stainless steel heat exchanger and Grundfos pump

The stainless steel heat exchanger is the headline, and it’s a genuine advantage rather than marketing. Aluminium exchangers are cheaper to make and conduct heat slightly better, but they’re more vulnerable to corrosion from poor water chemistry and system debris. Stainless is more forgiving of a system that hasn’t been perfectly cleaned, which matters enormously in an older UK property full of black sludge. In hard-water areas across the south and east, it’s the sensible bet.

The internals are solid for the money. The range uses a Grundfos hydroblock assembly with a Delta T variable-speed pump, which is a proper component rather than a budget substitute.

Servicing access is good and installers generally like them. Fewer awkward strip-downs means shorter, cheaper service visits, and parts availability has been reliable.

On controls, it’s better equipped than the price suggests. It’s OpenTherm compatible, works with Alpha’s own BUS controls, and takes a weather compensation sensor with a simple external connection. That last point matters more than it sounds, and I’ll come back to it in the installation section.

Alpha E-Tec Plus NX cons: smart controls and brand recognition

You don’t get the polish of a Vaillant or Viessmann flagship. The display is functional rather than lovely, and there’s no manufacturer smart ecosystem with the depth of Worcester’s or Vaillant’s apps. Alpha do sell a Wi-Fi thermostat, but if you want app control you may well be better off specifying a third-party smart stat over OpenTherm.

Brand recognition is a genuine downside at resale. Some estate agents and buyers still read “Worcester Bosch” as a selling point and “Alpha” as a question mark, however unfair that is on the engineering.

And it’s an unremarkable-looking box. If the boiler is going somewhere visible, that’s worth a thought.

How much does an Alpha E-Tec Plus NX cost fully installed in 2026?

Boiler pricing has drifted up over the last couple of years. As a 2026 benchmark, the median quote for a straightforward like-for-like combi swap in the UK is around £2,300, with most simple jobs landing between roughly £2,150 and £3,000. The wider realistic range runs from about £1,800 for a budget unit in an easy swap to £3,500 and beyond.

An E-Tec Plus NX typically sits at or slightly below that median, because you’re paying for internals and warranty rather than a brand premium. Expect roughly £2,000 to £2,900 fully fitted for a like-for-like replacement, more if the job involves moving the boiler, rerouting the flue, converting from a heat-only system, or upgrading old pipework. Back-boiler removals and regular-to-combi conversions commonly run £3,500 to £5,000.

Get three itemised quotes. A proper one covers the boiler, flue and fittings, removal and disposal of the old unit, all labour, commissioning, your Building Regulations certificate and warranty registration. If a quote looks unusually cheap, something on that list has been left out.

Alpha E-Tec Plus NX installation in the UK: regulations, warranty and winter setup

This is the part most boiler reviews skip, and it’s where the money is won or lost. The boiler on the wall is maybe half the story. Here’s what to get right.

Do you need building regulations approval to replace a gas combi boiler?

Replacing a gas boiler in England and Wales falls under the Building Regulations, specifically Part J (combustion and flues) and Part L (energy efficiency). It has to be notified and certified. In practice, a Gas Safe registered installer on a Competent Person Scheme self-certifies the work and notifies your local authority for you, and a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate follows in the post.

Keep that certificate. Your solicitor will ask for it when you sell, and a missing one turns into an awkward indemnity policy conversation at the worst possible moment. If your installer can’t self-certify, you have to apply to building control before work starts, which costs more and takes longer.

Separately, check the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card on the day. Card, photo, expiry date, and the back showing they’re qualified for the specific work. It takes thirty seconds.

Does the Alpha E-Tec Plus NX meet Boiler Plus regulations in England?

In England, Boiler Plus has applied since 2018. Every new gas boiler must hit a minimum 92% ErP efficiency, and a combi installation must include one of four things: load compensation, weather compensation, a smart thermostat with automation and optimisation, or flue gas heat recovery. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own broadly similar rules.

The E-Tec Plus NX clears the efficiency bar comfortably and takes a weather compensation sensor through a simple external connection. That’s often the cheapest compliant route: a small outdoor sensor rather than a £200 smart thermostat. It also happens to be the option that saves the most gas in practice, because the boiler modulates its flow temperature against outside conditions instead of cycling hard.

Ask your installer explicitly which Boiler Plus option they’re pricing. Some default to the cheapest smart stat they stock without mentioning that weather compensation was available.

What flow temperature should an Alpha E-Tec Plus NX be set to?

Part L now pushes new and fully replaced wet heating systems towards a maximum design flow temperature of 55°C where it’s reasonably practicable. This isn’t box-ticking. A condensing boiler only condenses, and only achieves its advertised efficiency, when the return water is cool enough. Run a condensing combi at 75 or 80°C and you’ve bought an A-rated boiler and are operating it like a 1990s one.

The E-Tec Plus NX has adjustable heating flow temperature and customisable range output, so ask the installer to commission it properly for your radiators rather than leaving it at factory settings. It’s a five-minute job that quietly saves you money every winter.

How to keep your Alpha 10 year boiler warranty valid

A 10-year warranty is only 10 years if you meet the conditions. Three things void more Alpha claims than anything else:

1. Registration. The warranty must be registered with Alpha after installation, within the stated window. Confirm your installer has actually done it and get the confirmation in writing.
2. Annual servicing. Every year, by a Gas Safe engineer, documented. Miss one and cover can lapse. Budget £70 to £120 a year.
3. Water quality. The system should be cleansed and dosed with inhibitor to BS 7593 standards. On an older system that means a proper flush, not a squirt of chemical through the filling loop.

Is the Alpha PremierPack Pro or Cyclone Plus NX filter worth it?

Fitting a Cyclone Plus NX magnetic filter takes the standard warranty from 10 to 11 years. The PremierPack Pro, which is a wall-mounting jig that includes the filter, takes it to 13. Both are far cheaper fitted during the original installation than retrofitted later, and the PremierPack in particular is a jig, so it goes on before the boiler does. Once the boiler’s hung, that opportunity is gone.

Even setting the extra warranty years aside, a magnetic filter on an old radiator circuit is close to essential. It catches the iron oxide sludge that otherwise ends up in the heat exchanger and the pump.

How to stop an Alpha boiler condensate pipe freezing in winter

Condensing boilers produce acidic condensate that drains away, and the single most common cause of a boiler lockout during a cold snap is a frozen condensate pipe. If any part of the run is external, insist on 32mm pipe rather than 22mm, keep the external run as short as possible, insulate it properly, and terminate it into a gully rather than open air where you can.

Getting this right at installation costs almost nothing. Getting it wrong means a no-heat callout on the coldest morning of the year, when every engineer within twenty miles is already booked.

Is the Alpha E-Tec Plus NX the right combi boiler for your home?

Yes, if you want strong internals and a long warranty without paying for a badge. The stainless steel exchanger, the Grundfos hydroblock and the 10-to-13-year cover make it one of the better value propositions on the market, particularly in hard-water areas.

Probably not, if you want a polished smart-home ecosystem, or if brand recognition at resale genuinely matters to you.

Size it on hot water rather than the badge number, get the weather compensation sensor specified, insist on the filter, and make sure the condensate pipe is done properly. Do those four things and this is a boiler that should sit on the wall quietly for well over a decade.
