The best oil boiler for most UK homes in 2026 is the Grant Vortex Pro, thanks to its wide choice of models, Riello burner and up to 10 years’ warranty through Grant’s installer scheme. For a combi, the Warmflow Agentis Combi and Grant Vortex Pro Combi lead the field. For an outdoor boiler, the Worcester Bosch Greenstar Danesmoor External is hard to beat, and Firebird’s Envirogreen range offers the longest warranty when fitted by an accredited installer.
“Best” depends on your home, though. A farmhouse with a boiler house and three bathrooms needs something very different from a two-bed cottage with the boiler in the kitchen. Why is the Grant Vortex Pro the best oil boiler overall?
Because there is a Vortex Pro for almost every house. Grant makes it as an internal regular boiler, a sealed system boiler, an external module with its own flue, and as internal and external combis. All use a Riello RDB low NOx burner, which oil engineers know well, and parts are easy to come by.

Grant quotes efficiency of up to 91.7% (SAP 2009) for the heat-only and system models, and up to 94.5% for the combis. The warranty is the other big draw: up to 10 years on Vortex Pro boilers installed from February 2023, provided a Grant G1 installer registers it within 30 days and fits a Grant Mag One filter. Grant also says all its floor-standing Vortex boilers are HVO compatible after conversion.
Worth knowing: the 10-year warranty depends on the installer scheme. Ask before you buy whether your installer can register it.
What is the best oil combi boiler?
The Warmflow Agentis Combi, with the Grant Vortex Pro Combi a very close second. Both suit homes with one or two bathrooms that want to get rid of a hot water cylinder.
Warmflow’s internal combi comes in 21, 26 and 33 kW versions, delivering 18, 22 and 24 litres a minute of hot water. Warmflow describes it as the UK and Ireland’s only AA rated oil boiler, and every Agentis ships with an ADEY MagnaClean filter, Teddington fire valve, oil line kit and inhibitor in the box, which saves on installation extras. Its external models are labelled HVO ready. Extended warranty terms come through Warmflow’s Connect installer scheme, and they vary, so check what your installer can offer.
The Grant Vortex Pro Combi wins on warranty, with the same up to 10-year cover as the rest of the Pro range. Its XS version is just 515 mm wide, which makes it one of the easiest oil combis to fit into a kitchen run.
Firebird’s Combi Xceed and Worcester’s Greenstar Heatslave II are good alternatives. The Heatslave II is rated A for heating and B for hot water, and comes with up to seven years’ warranty through a Worcester Accredited Installer.

For high outputs, the Firebird Popular goes up to 100 kW and the Grant Vortex Pro 46/70 up to 70 kW. Big farmhouses, barn conversions and homes with several bathrooms usually pair a regular or system boiler with a large unvented cylinder, rather than a combi, so hot water can be drawn from several taps at once. The Grant Vortex Eco gives you a condensing Grant with a Riello/Ecoflam burner at a lower spec than the Pro. Efficiency is up to 92.7% on the floor-standing models, and the warranty is up to five years through a Grant installer. It suits homes where a simple, reliable boiler matters more than the longest warranty.
Bear in mind that the boiler is often only around half the installed price. Flue work, filters, controls, the oil line and the state of your tank can matter as much as the brand.

What size oil boiler do I need?
Most homes need between 15 and 26 kW. Many oil boilers have a range, such as 15/26 kW, and are set to suit your home during commissioning. The right output depends on heat loss and hot water use, not just the number of bedrooms. An oversized boiler wastes oil by cycling on and off. Does a new oil boiler have to be condensing?
In almost every case, yes. Building Regulations set a minimum efficiency for replacement oil boilers that, in practice, means a condensing boiler, with non-condensing models only allowed where a formal assessment shows condensing isn’t practical. Should I choose an HVO-ready boiler?
It is a sensible box to tick. HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) is a renewable liquid fuel that can cut carbon emissions by up to around 90% compared with kerosene. Most current Grant, Worcester, Firebird and Warmflow oil boilers can run on it after a conversion, which typically means a new nozzle, filter and oil line and some burner adjustment. HVO costs more than kerosene and isn’t yet delivered everywhere, but an HVO-ready boiler keeps the option open.
Are oil boilers being banned?
No. There is no ban on replacing an oil boiler in an existing home in England, Wales or Scotland as of late 2026. A proposed phase-out for off-gas homes was consulted on in 2021 but never became law. New-build rules are different: Scotland’s New Build Heat Standard already stops oil boilers being used as the main heating in new homes, and England’s Future Homes Standard requires low carbon heating in new homes from March 2027. Neither affects replacing the boiler in the home you live in now.
Should I replace my oil boiler with a heat pump instead?
It is worth looking at, especially while the higher grant is available. Homes in England and Wales heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas connection can currently get £9,000 off an air or ground source heat pump through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, compared with £7,500 for other homes, until 31 March 2027. Which areas rely most on oil heating?
Northern Ireland has by far the most, with around half of homes using oil. In Wales, more than a third of homes in Ceredigion and over a quarter in Powys heat with oil, and Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire are not far behind. In England, oil is common in Shropshire, East Anglia, the South West, Lincolnshire, Cumbria and Northumberland, and in Scotland around three in ten rural homes rely on it.

What about landlords with oil-heated rentals?
Reliability and paperwork matter most. Choose a boiler with a long warranty, make sure it is registered, and keep a yearly CD/11 service record as evidence the heating is safe and maintained. Which oil boiler brand is most reliable?
Grant, Worcester Bosch, Firebird and Warmflow all have good reputations with oil engineers. Reliability depends at least as much on correct installation, a clean oil supply and yearly servicing as on the badge.
How long does an oil boiler last?
Typically 10 to 15 years, often longer with regular servicing. The tank has its own lifespan, and OFTEC suggests getting it assessed at around 20 years.
How long does it take to fit a new oil boiler?
Most like-for-like replacements take a day. Conversions, such as moving from a regular system to a combi, or replacing the tank as well, can take two.
Can I switch from oil to gas?
Only if a gas main is close enough to connect, which is rarely the case in oil-heated areas. If you want to stay off the mains but move away from oil, LPG boiler installation is another option.
